Governor Pence opens US 31 in Kokomo

Governor Mike Pence joined Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight, Congressman Todd Rokita, the US 31 Coalition, the Indiana Department of Transportation and other public officials to celebrate completion of the eagerly anticipated US 31 freeway corridor in Kokomo. The $155 million section allows through traffic to avoid 15 traffic signals and more than 130 access points on the preexisting US 31 through Kokomo, which is being renamed State Road 931.

Last US 31 Major Moves contract awarded

INDOT has awarded the last among $722 million in Major Moves highway construction contracts to upgrade or bypass US 31 bottlenecks near South Bend, Kokomo and Indianapolis. Primco Inc. of Fort Wayne will build a new 7th Road interchange just north of the existing US 30 interchange in Plymouth.

“This is an exciting time for Northern Indiana with the recent completion of the Hoosier Heartland between Lafayette and Fort Wayne and plans to open the new U. 31 in Kokomo to Thanksgiving travelers,” said Governor Mike Pence. “We are finishing what we started by having the three new US 31 sections fully under contract.”

Eastbound US 20 ramp to southbound US 31 closed

The ramp from eastbound US 20 to southbound US 31 is closed through early September while crews construct the new Jackson Road bridge. Traffic will be detoured around the closure using the ramp system.

Stretch of US 6 to Close through Early September for New US 31 Project

INDOT announces the closure of US 6 between US 31 and Lilac Road beginning Monday, June 3rd through early September 2013. The closure is necessary to ensure driver safety while crews work on the US 31/US 6 interchange for the new US 31 project.

Kern Road reopens early in South Bend

November 19, 2012

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the reopening of Kern Road to all traffic between US 31 and Locust Road beginning Wednesday, November 21, weather permitting. Work was completed a week and a half ahead of schedule.

This stretch of Kern Road closed in late July for the first phase of construction on the new US 31 Kern Road interchange. Kern Road will temporarily close again in the Spring of 2013 to allow crews to complete the bridge portion of the interchange.

US 6 to close Sept. 17 to 22

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces the closure of US 6 between US 31 and Lilac Road from Monday, September 17 through Saturday, September 22. The closure is necessary to ensure driver safety while crews use heavy machinery at the worksite. 

Kern Road to close through November

July 27, 2012

INDOT plans to close Kern Road between US 31 and Locust Road beginning Monday, July 30. The closure is expected to last through the end of November. The detours are:

  • Westbound -  Traffic will be detoured north on US 31, west on Ireland Road, south on Locust Road, and back to Kern Road.
  • Eastbound - Traffic will travel north on Locust Road, east on Ireland Road, south on US 31, and back to Kern Road.

 Two New Bridges On The Way For US 31 Project

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a Major Moves contract to construct two new bridges on the south side of South Bend, one on Jackson Road over US 31 and a second on Fellows Street over US 20. Contract Awarded for US 31 Work between Roosevelt and Kern Roads

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a Major Moves contract to construct new travel lanes between Roosevelt Road and just south of Kern Road in St. Joseph County as part of the new U.S. 31 project between South Bend and Plymouth. INDOT awards $24.2 million contract for work between US 6 and SR 4

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a Major Moves contract to construct four bridges and new road alignment between U.S. 6 and State Road 4 as part of the new U.S. 31 project between South Bend and Plymouth. Walsh & Kelly, Inc. of Griffith was awarded the $24,172,168 contract.

Speed limit update

The speed limit on US 31 between Roosevelt and Madison roads has been reduced to 35 mph. In the coming months, traffic will also be restricted to one lane in each direction through the construction zone.
